Your community is an awesome place to live, work, explore and play. It has a rich history and a unique story to tell. The truth is, most communities do. Yet few local governments are a partner in telling that story. By providing your municipality with the opportunity to effectively incorporate social media into its communications strategy, you are tapping into an opportunity to engage and inform residents, encourage meaningful interactions, get people involved in rich and varied ways, and introduce people from outside of the region to your little gem of a place. All of these things ultimately lead to a stronger community fabric for residents, business owners, stakeholders, and visitors.
Methods of communication have evolved from print and radio, yet local units of governments are not always meeting people where they are at. Social media is the equivalent of a digital relationship, but relationships are a two-way street. If you want stakeholders to engage, you have to participate in the conversation. And more than ever, that conversation is happening on social media.
why social media for local government?
Really? The possibilities seem endless...
First and foremost to get the community engaged...to reach more people faster...
whAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
To inform and educate residents...to attract people from outside of the region...didn't you mention you've been having a difficult time attracting new business and residents?
So obviously lots of people use social media, even I do...but I just don't understand what the benefit would be for a local unit of government...
Yes, our growth has been stagnant. I guess that does make a lot of sense...we haven't changed our communication methods in a while and are just not seeing the engagement we would like.
How about to promote economic growth & opportunities...to
celebrate all your community has to offer...to tell your story...
To create transparency...to be an effective community partner...to establish a face behind City Hall...
Ok, ok.....I understand. You've made your point.
Well now you're just showing off!
Hi, I'm Sarah! I'm the founder and owner of The Social District. I'm a Midwestern farm girl at heart who loves urban adventures and can't figure out if I'm a country mouse or a city mouse. I spent 10 years as an urban planner, then bought a retail store in a small downtown, and hustled to learn how to be effective with social media. Now, I use those (completely opposite) skills to help municipalities of every shape and size develop effective and engaging social media strategies. And then, if they want, my team manages those platforms for them.
I absolutely believe that every place has a unique story to tell, and that story should be celebrated. Each community is made up of a rich fabric of history, people, resources, and assets that make it an epic place to live, work and visit. Let's work together to celebrate everything your community has to offer!

We can even help take it through the approval process!

"Municipal Tax Increment Finance (TIF) districts that include 'Promotion' or 'Marketing' within their project plan would allow the costs of social media implementation to be a TIF-eligible expense. The use of social media by local government provides a unique opportunity to engage residents, promote the community and encourage economic growth and revitalization."

“Prior to working with Sarah, we had a social media presence, but we lacked consistency and strategy. Sarah has helped us to not only create and implement a comprehensive plan, but collects the data to show us the results. Our number of followers have nearly doubled in the past year, our engagement has grown, and we receive consistent feedback from our targeted audience that our Facebook feed is a valuable resource for them.”
